MetLife Stadium's New World Cup Grass Draws Player Criticism

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford replaced its artificial turf with natural grass in early May to meet FIFA’s requirement for the 2026 World Cup. The venue, set to host the tournament final on July 19, has seen its new surface described as hard, short‑bladed and almost artificial by several players during the opening group‑stage matches.

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot said the pitch “felt artificial – hard and tough,” while coach Didier Deschamps called it a “special surface” that “might have cement underneath.” Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior added that the dry grass slowed the game. After a rain‑soaked Norway‑Senegal match, coaches noted the moisture improved conditions, but overall concerns about player safety and ball movement persist. FIFA maintains that all 2026 venues are in “excellent condition” for playability and safety.
