Metrô-DF confirms component caused train derailment in Distrito Federal

Metrô-DF has confirmed that a component found on the tracks caused a train derailment on July 28, which led to the suspension of all stations in Asa Sul. The piece, identified as a “culatra” (head/cap), is part of the coupling bar system for Series 1000 trains.

According to reports provided to the Urban Transport and Mobility Commission of the Legislative Chamber (CTMU/CLDF), the component contains “fuse” bolts designed to break during intense braking to prevent damage to the coupling bar. While the equipment is designed to drop onto the tracks in such instances, Metrô-DF admitted it had never previously assessed that this could pose an operational risk.

Legislative officials have criticized the company’s inability to identify which specific train the piece detached from, calling the lack of oversight “very grave.” Additionally, inspections of the train involved in the July accident revealed technical issues, including four wheels with diameters below the minimum required standard.
