Metro Bilbao Line 4 environmental report details construction impacts

An environmental impact report released by the Basque Government regarding the construction of Metro Bilbao's Line 4 indicates that the project will involve moving approximately 705,555 cubic meters of earth. The new 6.22-kilometer suburban line is planned to connect Matiko and Rekalde, with construction expected to begin in late 2027. The project has an estimated budget of 412 million euros.

The report highlights several environmental and urban challenges. Noise levels during construction are expected to reach approximately 70 decibels, which is 5 to 6 decibels above the legal limit of 65 decibels for residential areas. Consequently, authorities may request a temporary suspension of Acoustic Quality Objectives in affected zones.

Other noted impacts include the removal of ornamental vegetation and potential interference with the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Additionally, excavations near the Museum of Fine Arts will require specific measures to protect the building and its collections. While vibrations are not expected to affect building foundations located more than two meters away, monitoring is recommended for sensitive areas such as the Deusto Universidad and Rekalde stations.
