Metro Bilbao workers protest after assaults at Astrabudua station
Workers at Metro Bilbao are protesting following a series of violent incidents, most recently an assault on a driver at the Astrabudua station in Erandio. On Saturday afternoon, a driver was struck in the jaw, resulting in a cut lip. This followed another incident early Sunday morning where youths allegedly assaulted municipal police officers at the same station.
The union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has organized several demonstrations to demand improved safety measures for staff, including the provision of protective vests, cut-resistant gloves, and self-defense sprays. Beyond physical security, workers are also calling for better economic conditions, specifically requesting increases in danger pay and other bonuses.
Labor representatives have warned that if these demands regarding safety and wages are not met by Metro Bilbao and its security contractors, employees may resort to strikes.
