Metro de Madrid transports 174,000 packages via Metropaq system

Metro de Madrid has transported 174,000 packages through its Metropaq system during its first eight months of operation. This innovative last-mile logistics initiative utilizes subway lines 3 and 12 to move goods underground, making it the first metropolitan railway in the world to incorporate such infrastructure.

In the first eight months, the project has prevented delivery vans from traveling more than 158,000 kilometers on surface streets, contributing to reduced traffic and an estimated reduction of 39.5 tons of CO2 emissions. According to European Commission methodology, the initiative has generated approximately 63,200 euros in savings by reducing costs related to traffic, air pollution, noise, and accidents.

The service operates via two models. Line 12 (MetroSur) uses a first-mile system developed with GLS agencies. Line 3 features 57 smart locker collection points distributed across 19 stations between Moncloa and El Casar. These lockers are accessible 19 hours a day, 365 days a year, via QR code. Major companies including Amazon, GLS, and SEUR have integrated into the service since April 14.
