Metro de Málaga reaches nearly 10 million riders in first half of 2026

Metro de Málaga, the concessionaire of the Andalusian government, recorded 9,953,379 passengers between 1 January and 30 June 2026, an increase of 279,042 (about 3 %) over the same period last year. The average daily ridership rose to almost 55,000 trips and monthly usage exceeded 1.6 million journeys.

Transport and Mobility Minister Mario Muñoz‑Atanet said the growth shows the metro has become central to mobility, especially after extending service to the city centre. He added that quality service prompts citizens to choose the metro for daily travel. Ticket usage patterns shifted, with the multimodal ticket of the Consorcio de Transportes Metropolitano accounting for 43 % of validations, while the traditional Metro de Málaga card fell to 36 %. Digital and contact‑less payment options such as EMV cards, the MásMetro discount scheme and post‑paid ABT together now represent about 5 % of validations, roughly doubling their share in a year.
