Chile transportation: Metro de Santiago delays and regional upgrades

Chile is seeing various developments in its public transportation sector. In Santiago, Metro de Santiago is managing several major projects and operational challenges. The construction of Line 7 is facing delays due to archaeological findings and technical issues with a Chinese tunneling machine, potentially pushing completion beyond December 2028. However, Line 7 is expected to reduce travel times by 50% for 1.6 million people once finished. Additionally, plans for a future Line 10 have been discussed, which could connect La Florida to Maipú by extending Line 4A.

Operational disruptions also occurred on Line 4 due to a dog on the tracks, causing significant delays during rush hour.

In the Los Ríos region, the Regional Council approved over 5 billion pesos to fund 39 new electric buses by 2027, aiming to modernize the fleet and improve service quality through electromobility. Meanwhile, in La Araucanía, authorities inaugurated a 5-kilometer extension of the Line 3 taxibus route to Metrenco in Padre Las Casas to improve connectivity for local residents.
