Metro de Santo Domingo faces increasing service disruptions

The Metro de Santo Domingo experienced significant service disruptions during the morning rush hour on Friday, August 21. Commuters reported long lines and waits of nearly an hour at stations such as Concepción Bona, particularly for trains heading toward María Montez. While a specific technical cause for this particular delay was not immediately established, personnel were deployed to manage the high volume of passengers.

This incident follows a growing pattern of operational failures within the system. Since 2020, the frequency of incidents has increased, with reports indicating a rise from nine incidents between 2020 and 2024 to six incidents in just the first seven months of 2026. Past disruptions have included traction system failures, electrical supply issues, and more serious events such as a train collision in September 2023 and a total system blackout in November 2025.

Despite these challenges, the network continues to expand, including the recent commencement of regular fare collection on the Line 2-C extension to Los Alcarrizos on August 17.
