Metro Mass Transit returns to profit in 2025

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) returned to profitability in 2025, posting a net profit of GH¢4.48 million. This marks a significant turnaround from the GH¢2.52 million net loss recorded in 2024, according to the 2025 State Ownership Report by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA).

The company’s growth was driven by operational improvements rather than accounting adjustments. Operating revenue rose by 16.87%, increasing from GH¢138.49 million in 2024 to GH¢161.85 million in 2025. This growth was primarily fueled by a 17.38% increase in ticket sales and a 13.17% rise in revenue from hiring and school bus services.

Passenger volume saw a substantial increase, with MMTL transporting 2.51 million passengers in 2025, up from 1.93 million the previous year. Despite a reduction in workforce from 1,696 to 1,483 employees, employee productivity rose from GH¢80,000 to GH¢110,000 per worker. The company’s cost recovery ratio also improved to 102.7%, indicating that operating revenue successfully covered operating expenses.
