Metro secures $150M for Vermont Avenue bus rapid transit

Metro has secured $150 million in federal funding to construct a bus rapid transit (BRT) line along Vermont Avenue. The project will span 12.4 miles, stretching from Hollywood Boulevard in Los Feliz to 120th Street in unincorporated Athens.

Key features of the development include the construction of 26 stops and dedicated side-running bus lanes. The project aims to improve efficiency on what is currently Metro’s busiest bus route, which sees approximately 36,000 daily trips. Metro estimates the new infrastructure could increase ridership to 66,000 daily passengers and reduce travel times from 70 minutes to 53 minutes.

Heavy roadway work is expected to begin in late 2026. While Metro is also investigating the long-term possibility of a subway or light rail line for the corridor, funding for such a project is not anticipated until 2067.
