British Columbia sheds 5,500 jobs in August

British Columbia lost 5,500 jobs in August, according to the latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada. While the province added 20,600 part-time positions, full-time employment saw a significant decline of 26,000 jobs compared to July.

As a result of these losses, the unemployment rate in British Columbia rose by 0.3 percentage points to 6.5 per cent, which is 0.2 percentage points higher than the previous year. This trend mirrors a national loss of 42,000 jobs in August, though Canada's national unemployment rate remained stable at 6.4 per cent.

Acting jobs minister Adrian Dix noted that while monthly losses are negative, the province has seen an increase of approximately 20,000 full-time jobs over the past year. He emphasized the need for economic diversification to protect against trade uncertainties following the collapse of a trade deal between Canada and the United States on August 21.

Conversely, Conservative labour critic Kiel Giddens highlighted a year-over-year loss of 17,200 natural resources jobs, arguing that the decline in full-time work impacts the stability of families.
