Metro Venetian tanker hit by projectile off the coast of Oman
The Metro Venetian, an LR2 tanker owned by Greek shipping magnate Theodore Angelopoulos through Metrostar Management Corp, was struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman.
The attack occurred approximately 9 nautical miles northeast of Ash Shishah. The impact caused significant damage to the vessel's engine room, leaving the ship unable to maneuver. Despite the damage, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that all crew members are safe and uninjured.
The incident follows a recent attack on the Saudi-flagged tanker Amzan in the Red Sea. The Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) has maintained the regional maritime threat level at ‘Serious,’ noting ongoing harassment of commercial shipping by Houthi forces using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Authorities are currently investigating the nature of the projectile used in the attack on the Metro Venetian.
