Metrolink suspends Oceanside service due to high tides

Metrolink is suspending Orange County Line service to and from Oceanside for five days, starting Monday, due to anticipated high tides along the southern Orange County coastline. The suspension affects travel between Oceanside and the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station through Friday.

During this period, Orange County Line trains will operate only between Los Angeles Union Station and Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo. Metrolink stated it will not provide replacement bus services for the affected segment. The decision aims to prevent widespread delays and cancellations that could occur if high tides disrupt rail operations near San Clemente.

The move follows a September incident where high tides and powerful waves caused erosion and slope damage to tracks near San Clemente, necessitating emergency repairs for Metrolink, Amtrak, and freight services. By turning trains around at Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, Metrolink intends to maintain more predictable service on the rest of the line and reduce traffic through the vulnerable coastal corridor. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains are expected to continue operating through the area as long as conditions remain safe.
