Metropolis of Nicopolis celebrates Saint Alcison
The Metropolis of Nicopolis and Preveza celebrated the feast day of Saint Hieromartyr Alcison, the Metropolitan of Nicopolis, on September 27 and 28, 2026.
Historical accounts describe Alcison as a prominent 6th-century hierarch who served during the reign of Emperor Anastasius I. He is noted for his defense of Orthodox faith against the ‘Typus of Anastasius,’ a decree that rejected the Council of Chalcedon. In 512, Alcison convened a synod in Nicopolis with 40 bishops from Illyricum to condemn the decree. His steadfastness eventually led to his martyrdom in 517.
Commemorative services included a Great Panegyrical Vespers at the Early Christian Basilica B in the archaeological site of Nicopolis, led by Metropolitan Chrysostomos. The celebrations concluded with Orthros and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Saint Charalambos.
