Metropolitan General introduces HRAA ceramic hip resurfacing in Greece
Metropolitan General has introduced a new orthopedic technique in Greece called Hip Resurfacing Anterior Approach (HRAA) using ceramic materials. The procedure, which began in June 2026, is designed to treat patients with advanced hip osteoarthritis.
Unlike total hip arthroplasty, which removes the femoral head, the HRAA technique preserves the femoral head by covering it with a high-tech ceramic shell that articulates with a ceramic acetabular insert. This bone-preserving method is particularly beneficial for younger, active patients, as it maintains bone stock for potential future revision surgeries.
Performed by orthopedic surgeon Athanasios Koukakis, the technique is aimed at active men and women, typically under the age of 65. The procedure allows for rapid recovery, with patients often staying in the clinic for only one to two days following fast-track mobilization protocols. The technique is not recommended for patients suffering from advanced osteoporosis or severe hip dysplasia.
