Metropolitan Museum of Art cancels John Galliano exhibition

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled its planned 2027 exhibition, ‘John Galliano: Horizons,’ following intense backlash regarding the designer’s history of antisemitic and racist remarks. The retrospective was intended to be the centerpiece of the 2027 Met Gala.

Opposition to the exhibition was driven by Jewish community leaders, advocacy organizations, and political figures, including New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin. Reports indicate that major museum patrons also threatened to withdraw financial support if the exhibition proceeded. Galliano ultimately agreed to withdraw from the project, stating that it was best the exhibition not take place at this time.

The controversy has also placed Anna Wintour, a Met trustee and chair of the Costume Institute Benefit, under scrutiny. Insiders suggest that her decision to back the exhibition despite Galliano’s past convictions and controversial statements has led to questions regarding her judgment and influence within the institution.
