Met Museum to Honor John Galliano with 2027 Gala Exhibition

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced a spring 2027 exhibition titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” opening on May 9 2027 and remaining on view until January 9 2028. The show makes Galliano the third living designer to receive a solo Met exhibition, after Yves Saint‑Laurent (1983) and Rei Kawakubo (2017). Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition will trace Galliano’s four‑decade career—from his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection through his tenures at Givenchy, Dior, and Maison Margiela—while directly confronting the antisemitic, racist and anti‑Asian remarks that led to his 2011 conviction in France. The Met Gala in May 2027 will be themed around the exhibition, and Anna Wintour, Met trustee and Vogue editor, along with Bolton and Galliano, met with Jewish community leaders in New York to discuss how the show will address those controversial episodes. The exhibition is organized into three sections—“Bearings,” “Horizons,” and “Atlas of Transformation”—and will feature garments, sketches, toiles, research books and archival material. Max Hollein, the museum’s director and CEO, said Galliano’s influence on fashion has been profound.
