Metropolitan Opera debuts new production of Verdi’s Macbeth
The Metropolitan Opera has debuted a new production of Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’, marking the company debut of director Louisa Proske. The production features Quinn Kelsey in the title role and Lise Davidsen as Lady Macbeth.
Proske’s staging emphasizes the influence of the supernatural, portraying the witches as malicious puppet masters who oversee the tragedy. The production utilizes a rotating set by Jon Bausor, featuring a jagged aperture in a wall that resembles a gaping eye, creating a sense of continuous surveillance.
Musical and visual elements include shadow-heavy lighting by Adam Silverman and costumes by Montana Levi Blanco. The production incorporates elements of the 1865 Paris version, such as partially restored ballet music, while reintroducing Macbeth’s final aria to balance the opera's duration.
