Metropolitan Police expands Sur-Ron electric motorcycle fleet

The Metropolitan Police has expanded its fleet of Sur-Ron electric motorcycles from five to 25 to combat street crime in London. The expansion includes 20 new Ultra Bee models, funded by proceeds from seized criminal assets and Home Office support for training.

These lightweight electric vehicles are designed to navigate narrow streets, jump curbs, and climb stairs, allowing officers to access areas unreachable by standard police cars or motorcycles. The Met has identified these bikes as a “game changer” in addressing phone theft, noting that the fleet helped reduce such offences by more than 13,000 across London over the past year.

The move specifically targets criminals who use high-powered, often illegally modified e-bikes to commit robberies. While many criminal e-bikes are illegal, the police use road-approved versions that meet registration and insurance requirements. So far this year, officers have seized over 2,500 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters.
