Metropolitan Police pass Grenfell fire evidence to prosecutors

Metropolitan Police investigators have handed over evidence files to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) regarding the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. The files involve 20 companies and 54 individuals.

The investigation follows the June 2017 blaze in North Kensington, west London, which resulted in 72 deaths. A public inquiry previously determined the disaster was avoidable, citing decades of government failure and systematic dishonesty by companies regarding combustible cladding.

Potential offences under investigation include corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, health and safety violations, fraud, and misconduct in public office. The CPS has stated that charging decisions are expected to be made before the 10th anniversary of the tragedy on June 14, 2027.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth described the transfer as a “milestone moment” in one of the most complex investigations conducted by any UK law enforcement agency. The massive inquiry involved reviewing the roles of over 15,000 people and 700 organisations, resulting in 12,600 pages of evidence being submitted to prosecutors.
