Metropolitan Police re-examine CCTV in Jill Dando murder case
The Metropolitan Police are re-examining CCTV footage from the 1999 murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando, utilizing recent advancements in video enhancement technology. The investigation focuses on footage from Putney Bridge Underground station, which captured an unidentified individual known as ‘Man X’ approximately 20 minutes after Dando was shot dead outside her home in Fulham.
Detectives have spent the last ten months locating and digitizing original recordings from police archives to facilitate this review. A central aspect of the renewed interest involves potential links to Milorad Ulemek, a Serbian paramilitary commander and assassin currently serving a prison sentence in Serbia. Facial comparison experts have previously noted similarities between Ulemek’s features and those of ‘Man X’.
While the review represents a significant effort to utilize modern forensics, the Metropolitan Police clarified that this is part of ongoing inquiries and should not be interpreted as the opening of a new investigation or a definitive breakthrough. The case remains one of the United Kingdom’s most high-profile unsolved murders.
