Greece implements strict new nutritional rules for school canteens

Greece is implementing new, stricter nutritional regulations for school canteens in primary and secondary education to combat childhood obesity. Developed by the Ministry of Health and the National Nutrition Committee, the new framework replaces the 2013 regulations.

The new rules mandate a complete ban on processed meats, such as ham, bacon, and sausages, in sandwiches and toasts. Additionally, soft drinks, energy drinks, and highly processed snacks like chips, biscuits, popcorn, and ice cream are prohibited. There are also new restrictions on portion sizes for items like traditional pastries.

To promote healthier habits, canteens will now offer more nutritious options, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, dairy products like kefir, and whole-grain snacks. The regulations also include strict guidelines from the National Public Health Organization (EODY) regarding food safety, specifically temperature controls for storage and preparation to prevent foodborne illnesses.
