Metropolitano Stadium to receive AI security and 5G upgrades

Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char has announced a major technological overhaul of the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez. The renovation, which began in January 2026 with an investment exceeding 45 million dollars, aims to bring the venue up to international standards for South American football.

The security upgrade includes the installation of over 300 advanced cameras, including 61-megapixel units capable of high-definition zooming into distant grandstands. The system utilizes generative artificial intelligence with a local processor to ensure data privacy. This AI allows operators to use natural language commands to set preventive instructions, enabling the system to interpret visual feeds in real time and automatically flag potential disturbances.

In addition to security, the stadium will feature modern internet infrastructure. The project is also expected to increase spectator capacity from 43,000 to 65,000.
