Metrorex faces potential shutdown due to financial crisis
Metrorex, the operator of the Bucharest metro system, is facing a severe financial crisis that threatens to halt public transport operations. Union leaders from the United Free Metro Union (USLM) have warned that if employees do not receive their salaries by mid-September, the metro could cease functioning.
According to USLM president Marian Artimon, the company has only 3,000 lei remaining in its accounts, an amount insufficient to cover upcoming payroll. The crisis is compounded by a staff shortage of nearly 1,000 employees and reports of deteriorating working conditions in underground facilities.
The Ministry of Transport has suspended state budget funds due to administrative issues, specifically noting that Metrorex failed to follow legal procedures for approving its income and expenditure budget. Union representatives state that the current budget allocation is 35% lower than required for operations. While the company has attempted to maintain schedules by introducing Bombardier trains to cover maintenance on CAF units, the underlying financial instability remains the primary concern for commuters and staff.
