Metrorex faces train shortages and new budget constraints

Metrorex is facing operational challenges due to a reduction in available rolling stock. Seven CAF trains have been withdrawn for maintenance by the provider Alstom, with an additional 12 expected to undergo similar procedures. This reduction comes amid concerns from union leaders that the simultaneous withdrawal of trains could increase traffic pressure and delays, particularly as passenger numbers rise with the start of the school year.

To compensate for the missing CAF units, the operator is relying on Bombardier trains. However, workers have warned that these older units may struggle with heavy passenger loads, noting issues such as speed reduction when overcrowded and door-related resets that cause station delays.

On the financial side, Minister Radu Miruță confirmed that Metrorex employee salaries have been paid following the government's approval of a new budget. The Minister stated he rejected previous budget proposals to avoid increasing the company's losses and to prevent a hike in passenger ticket prices. The newly approved budget is expected to reduce Metrorex's losses by 100 million lei. Miruță emphasized the need to recover funds through penalties and commercial opportunities, such as advertising and space rentals, rather than increasing costs for commuters.
