Mets bench Marcus Semien after IL return, Brett Baty shines in win

Marcus Semien was activated from the 10‑day injured list ahead of the second half of the season, but manager Andy Green chose to keep him off the lineup in Thursday’s 4‑1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Left‑handed rookie Brett Baty started at second base, hit a home run and added a second hit, providing the key offensive spark.

Green said Semien needed a full workout day before returning to regular play and is expected to start the next game against left‑hander Jesús Luzardo. Semien has missed time since June 24 with a strained left hip flexor and has struggled both offensively and defensively in what has been the toughest season of his 14‑year career. The decision also allowed the Mets to retain flexibility with other left‑handed hitters such as Jared Young.

The win gave the Mets a brief rebound after being swept at home by Boston, while shortstop Bo Bichette returned from ankle soreness and filled in at third base.
