Mets' Clay Holmes Fractures Tibia, Out 6‑8 Weeks, Possible Late‑Season Return

Mets left‑hander Clay Holmes suffered a tibia fracture after a 111.1‑mph comebacker from Yankees rookie Spencer Jones. Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Holmes will be placed on the 60‑day injured list, with an estimated 6‑8 weeks to heal and a potential return in late August or early September, depending on whether surgery is required.

Holmes had a team‑best 1.86 ERA among Mets starters and was a key piece in the NL East lead. The Mets plan to fill his spot with pitchers such as Brandon Sproat and David Peterson while maintaining their rotation.

The injury also opened a spot for highly regarded prospect Zach Thornton, who is set to make his MLB debut for the Mets as a result of Holmes' absence.
