Mette Frederiksen criticizes musician over niqab comments

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has entered a public debate regarding women's rights and social control following comments made by musician Isam B. The dispute began after Isam B appeared on the podcast ‘Platformen’, where he suggested that wearing a niqab could be viewed as a feminist act because it is provocative. During the discussion, he compared the effect of wearing a niqab to that of a ninja.

Frederiksen criticized these remarks on Facebook, stating that comparing women in niqabs to ninjas is ‘a mockery’ of those who struggle daily against social control and oppression. She emphasized that while Denmark is one of the freest societies, not all women and girls can live freely or feel safe.

Isam B responded on Instagram, acknowledging the Prime Minister's disagreement but denying that he intended to ridicule women. He argued that freedom must include the right to make personal choices regarding one's body and appearance, even if those choices are unpopular with others. He maintained that his point was to highlight the condescending attitude often directed at women who choose to wear the niqab.
