Mette Frederiksen signals intent for fourth term as Prime Minister

During the Social Democratic party annual meeting, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced her intention to seek a fourth term as Prime Minister, provided party members support her leadership. While she expressed a desire to continue her political work through the current and next election periods, political commentators criticized the speech for lacking a clear vision or ambitious plan for the party’s future.

Addressing domestic issues, Frederiksen responded to alarming PISA results regarding declining academic levels in Danish schools. The government proposed a total ban on mobile phones in primary schools and the establishment of a tripartite committee involving the government, municipalities, teachers, and parents to combat academic decline. The administration also acknowledged that the 2012 inclusion law for students with special needs was a mistake.

Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed welfare crime, sparking support from the labor union FOA. FOA leadership praised her stance against the misuse of public funds by private actors, particularly within the specialized social sector, noting concerns regarding money laundering and the exploitation of community resources.
