Mettur Dam water reaches Upper Anicut amid irrigation concerns
Water released from the Mettur Dam to irrigate the Cauvery Delta has reached the Upper Anicut in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu. However, farmers are expressing concern as the flow has significantly decreased.
On September 1, 7,000 cusecs of water were released from the Mettur reservoir following instructions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. By the time the water reached the Upper Anicut on Friday morning, the flow had dropped to approximately 1,500 cusecs. This is far below the 16,000 cusecs that irrigation experts state is necessary to effectively operate the irrigation network and support agricultural needs in the delta region.
The water previously passed through the Mayannur Barrage in Karur district, where the flow fluctuated before approximately 2,050 cusecs were directed toward the Upper Anicut. Due to the low volume, officials have directed the available 1,500 cusecs toward the Grand Anicut (Kallanai). Experts warn that current levels may be insufficient to reach branch rivers and irrigation canals, potentially limiting the water to the main river course.
