Međugorje Open 2026 international chess tournament opens

The “Međugorje Open 2026” international chess tournament officially opened on September 13 at the Circle Sport Center in Međugorje. Organized by the “Brotnjo” Chess Club, the event features approximately 120 players representing 16 countries across Europe and Asia.

Unlike previous rapid tournaments, this competition utilizes a standard format to allow participants to compete for international FIDE ratings. The tournament is scheduled to run until September 19. Officials noted the event's potential for tourism promotion in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, highlighting the intersection of sports and the region's international profile.

Key attendees at the opening ceremony included Marija Buhač, President of the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, and Tomislav Martinović, President of the House of Peoples of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tournament director Ivan Pehar emphasized the goal of providing local young players with the opportunity to gain experience against international opponents.
