Mewa boosts AI-driven textile quality control through Desion investment
Mewa Group has deepened its partnership with Desion GmbH, a Darmstadt‑based AI specialist founded in 2020 as a spin‑off of the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Fraunhofer Institute. The strategic stake reinforces a multi‑year collaboration that previously yielded a patented AI system for high‑visibility garment inspection, earning Mewa a place in the 2017 German Industry Award top‑10 for optical technologies.
The latest rollout introduces an AI‑powered cloth‑inspection system across Mewa’s facilities. Cameras capture images of washed and dried garments from multiple angles; a vision‑based AI algorithm evaluates each item’s category, quality and defect type. Depending on the assessment, the fabric is either returned to the customer, sent for another wash cycle, or discarded. COO Björn Scheel said the investment “creates the foundations for future textile services” by scaling AI to make processes more efficient while maintaining high quality standards.
