Germany: Reformation Day 2026 and Regional Holiday Status
In Germany, Reformation Day on Friday, October 31, 2026, serves as a public holiday in several federal states. Since German reunification, it has been a legal holiday in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Additionally, since 2018, it is observed as a holiday in Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein.
Notably, the day is not a public holiday in Bavaria. While the date coincides with Halloween, the two observances are unrelated; Reformation Day commemorates the beginning of the church reformation initiated by Martin Luther in 1517, whereas Halloween is a cultural tradition rooted in Celtic mythology.
