Mexicali commerce and services see increased sales and job growth

Retail and service sectors in Mexicali, Baja California, have experienced significant growth. According to data from INEGI, wholesale trade revenues increased by 10.1% annually in May 2026, marking the most substantial growth in wholesale sales for a fifth month since the pandemic.

Retail trade also saw a 2% annual increase during the same period. This economic activity is being driven by a multiplier effect from construction projects, including the development of shopping centers, hotel expansions, and road infrastructure modernization.

Additionally, data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) indicates that the commerce and services sectors generated 29,945 new formal jobs in Mexicali during May 2026 compared to the previous year.
