Mexicali security alert following potential explosive threats

Authorities in Mexicali, Mexico, have increased security measures following alerts from the United States and Canada regarding a potential explosive attack against law enforcement facilities. The threat specifically targets the Municipal Police and the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR).

The threat is attributed to ‘Los Rusos’, a criminal cell linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and the Zambada faction. This warning follows a recent operation in which Mexican authorities seized approximately 120 kilograms of fentanyl pills, equivalent to more than 4 million doses, along with weapons and vehicles.

In response to the security concerns, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico suspended government activities and official travel to Mexicali on August 25. U.S. officials have advised citizens to avoid government buildings and remain vigilant.

Baja California officials have activated the State Peace Construction Table, deploying over 450 personnel from the Army, Navy, National Guard, and various state and municipal security forces to reinforce surveillance in public buildings, the Mexicali Valley, and the border with Sonora. While security has been heightened, local authorities stated that no immediate evidence has confirmed the threat will materialize and reported that the city remains calm.
