Mexicali security alert: U.S. suspends activities and travel
The U.S. government has suspended all official activities and travel to Mexicali, Baja California, for August 25, 2026, following a security alert regarding a potential threat. The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana issued the warning, advising American citizens to avoid government buildings, seek shelter if an incident occurs, and follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement.
While official diplomatic communications have not specified the nature or origin of the threat, reports from journalist Luis Chaparro suggest the alert may stem from DEA intelligence. These reports indicate that the criminal group Los Rusos allegedly planned attacks against municipal police and the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) facilities in the city.
In response, the Baja California state government, led by Governor Marina del Pilar, has reinforced security operations. A coordinated deployment involving the Mexican Army (SEDENA), Navy (SEMAR), National Guard, and various state and federal police forces is active across Mexicali to maintain order and prevent potential violence.
