Mexican agricultural sector faces budget shifts in Puebla and Sonora

In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier announced a joint investment of 4.615 billion pesos for the agricultural sector this year, coordinated with the Mexican federal government. The state contributes 1.7 billion pesos through 14 programs, while the federal government provides 2.915 billion pesos via 10 programs. This initiative, termed the ‘Revolución del Campo’, aims to enhance productivity through technology, mechanization, and sustainable practices. Projections for 2027 suggest a combined investment of 5.403 billion pesos.

Simultaneously, agricultural producers in Sonora are raising concerns regarding the 2027 federal budget proposal. Omar Alberto Guillén Partida of the Alianza Campesina del Noroeste (Alcano) warned of a potential 20 percent reduction in specific programs related to production, commercialization, fertilizers, and sanitation. While the general agricultural budget may increase, Alcano reports that specific productive program funds could drop from approximately 13 billion pesos to 10 billion pesos, potentially impacting farmer profitability.
