Mexican agricultural water management and infrastructure updates

In Oaxaca, the National Water Commission (Conagua) is advancing the modernization of agricultural infrastructure through the Hydro-Agricultural Infrastructure Support Program. A joint investment of 26.6 million pesos, comprising 19 million from Conagua and contributions from state government and local producers, will support 11 irrigation units. This project aims to secure the irrigation of 477 hectares of crops, primarily corn, across the Central Valleys, Mixteca, and Sierra Sur regions.

In Tamaulipas, farmers from Irrigation District 026 are requesting that Conagua transfer at least 100 million cubic meters of water from the El Cuchillo Dam to the Marte R. Gómez Dam. According to Marco Antonio Garza Acosta, spokesperson for the Díaz Ordaz irrigators, the request aligns with the 1996 Agreement conditions. As of late October, El Cuchillo held 710 million cubic meters, while Marte R. Gómez held 576.4 million cubic meters. Additionally, representatives of the district unanimously rejected any proposals to transfer water from the Marte R. Gómez Dam to the United States.
