Mexican agricultural workers demand social security protections

At a national forum organized by the Alianza Campo Justo and the Inter-American Conference on Social Security, female agricultural workers from various Mexican regions, including Guerrero, Sonora, Michoacán, and Sinaloa, demanded real social security guarantees. Workers testified to the lack of maternity leave and disability benefits, noting they often work until the day before childbirth due to economic necessity.

Statistics indicate that 90% of agricultural workers in Mexico lack social security, and 70% do not have access to health services. While expanding social security coverage for the agricultural and fishing sectors is a stated commitment of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, workers highlighted that current public policies have yet to reach the more than two million people employed in the Mexican countryside.
