Mexican airlines face heavy losses from rising fuel costs

Mexican airlines are facing significant financial pressure due to rising fuel costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Major carriers are attempting to avoid raising passenger ticket prices, but rising operational expenses are leading to substantial net losses.

Volaris reported a 70% increase in average fuel costs, which contributed to a net loss of $127 million. Aeroméxico saw fuel prices rise by 79.6% compared to the previous year, resulting in a $58 million loss for the semester. Viva Aerobus also reported a 57.6% increase in fuel costs per seat-mile, describing the current environment as "unprecedented."

To mitigate these costs without raising fares—which could deter cautious travelers—airlines are implementing strategies such as reducing flight frequencies to concentrate passengers on fewer scheduled trips.
