Mexican airlines Volaris and Viva Aerobus announce merger

The Mexican aviation sector is undergoing significant structural changes. Volaris and Viva Aerobus have announced a merger at the holding level to create Grupo Más Vuelos. While the two airlines will maintain separate brands and operations, the alliance is expected to control approximately 70 percent of the passenger market, a move that will require scrutiny from the National Antitrust Commission (CNA).

Separately, Aeroméxico reported a 58 percent drop in net profit for the third quarter, falling to 40.6 million dollars. The airline cited rising jet fuel costs, driven by geopolitical tensions in Iran, as a primary financial challenge. Despite the profit decline, Aeroméxico saw a 13 percent increase in total revenue, reaching 619 million dollars, as it attempted to pass fuel costs to passengers. Additionally, the airline has temporarily suspended operations at Tulum International Airport due to market conditions and reduced demand.
