Mexico authorities investigate Atizapán murders and Omealca attack

Authorities in Mexico are investigating two separate violent incidents. In Atizapán de Zaragoza, Estado de México, a multi-homicide occurred on September 1, resulting in the deaths of Jonathan Meléndez, a musician for the band Camilo Séptimo, his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old domestic worker, Aleyda Romero. Two suspects, Diego Sebastián Rosen Ferlini and his driver Gerardo “N”, were apprehended. Investigators believe the motive was the attempted theft of a “cold box” containing millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The suspects face potential sentences of up to 296 years in prison.

In a separate incident in Omealca, Veracruz, an armed attack by organized crime killed two federal agents and injured a third. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the agents were conducting investigations when they were targeted. A joint operation involving the Army, Navy, National Guard, and state authorities has been deployed to locate the perpetrators. During the security response in the Omealca area, two individuals who had been kidnapped were successfully located and released.
