Chile court orders preventive detention for 'El Rana' over officer’s death
A Chilean court has ordered preventive imprisonment for Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, known as “El Rana”, on charges of homicide of Carabinero Eugenio Naín. The fatal shooting occurred on 30 October 2020 during an armed confrontation on Route 5 near La Cantera de Metrenco, Padre Las Casas, when a group of attackers attempted to block the road with a barricade. Cancino Tapia is accused of firing the shot that mortally wounded Naín, who later died of thoracic injuries.
The Juzgado de Garantía de Temuco set the investigation deadline to 15 August 2026, stating that Cancino Tapia’s freedom poses a risk to public safety. The court also indicated that authorities will pursue possible accomplices and related offenses, including illegal firearm possession and obstruction of justice.
