Mexican authorities focus on victim support and extortion reduction
In Morelos, Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron Escobar has called for law enforcement agents to prioritize victims during criminal investigations. Speaking during a National Public Ministry Day event, Blumenkron emphasized the need for the state prosecutor's office to become a more humane and empathetic institution, placing the needs of families seeking justice at the center of their operations.
In Quintana Roo, municipal authorities in Puerto Morelos are implementing a program to decrease impunity regarding extortion crimes. A recent working session focused on analyzing crime incidence, evaluating response capacities, and improving coordination between security forces, civil society, and affected individuals. The initiative follows a professionalization phase for police forces in Playa del Carmen, Benito Juárez, and Puerto Morelos, aiming to establish specific operational lines of action to combat extortion and 'cobro de piso' within the municipality.
