Mexican authorities issue alerts regarding digital fraud and fake passport sites
Mexican security agencies, including the State Public Security Secretariat (SSPE) and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), have issued warnings regarding various digital fraud schemes.
The SSPE has specifically identified fraudulent websites that impersonate the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) to scam citizens seeking Mexican passports. These fake sites mimic official logos and colors to trick users into providing personal documents and making fraudulent bank transfers. Authorities emphasize that passport appointment scheduling is free and should only be conducted through the official gob.mx domain.
Additionally, the SSPC is warning against social engineering tactics where criminals impersonate banks, government authorities, or family members via phone calls, emails, and messaging apps. These schemes aim to manipulate individuals into revealing sensitive financial or personal information. Citizens are advised to verify identities before sharing data and to remain vigilant during the Cybersecurity Month.
