Quintana Roo authorities block beach privatization and clear sargassum
Municipal officials in Playa del Carmen halted an attempt to privatize public access to Playa 72. After a citizen complaint, Zofemat inspectors, urban development officers and public safety personnel sealed unauthorized structures and affirmed that the shoreline remains a public space under federal regulations.
In Cozumel, the municipal government, together with Zofemat, the Mexican Navy and the Air Force, carried out a massive cleanup that removed roughly 15 tonnes of sargassum and solid waste from the Chen Río beach area. The effort aims to protect the island’s tourism image and preserve a key nesting site for marine turtles.
