Mexican banks face rising high‑risk loans; India's gold‑loan market set to hit Rs 30 lakh crore

Moody's Investors Service warned that Mexico’s banking sector is seeing a sharp rise in high‑risk loan exposure. Loans classified as Stage 3 grew 14.35%, reaching about US$10 million, as household debt rose and economic growth slowed. Major lenders such as Banorte, Banamex and Inbursa were singled out, while other banks including HSBC, BBVA Mexico, Santander and Scotiabank also reported increases in their Stage 3 portfolios.

In India, rating agency ICRA projected that the organised gold‑loan market will expand to over Rs 30 lakh crore by the 2027‑28 fiscal year, up from roughly Rs 18 lakh crore in 2026. The sector is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate above 30%, with non‑bank financial companies’ share rising to about 23%. Recent acquisitions by Godrej Capital and Tata Capital signal intensified competition and a push for broader branch networks, while ICRA cautioned that NBFCs must strengthen risk management as loan‑to‑value ratios shift.
