Mexican business groups demand fiscal reform and an end to inspector extortion

Business leaders in Mexico are calling for administrative reforms and increased oversight to address fiscal mismanagement and corruption. In La Coalia, Alejandro Orozco Alvarado, Executive Vice President of Canaco-Servytur LC, noted that less than 10% of the municipal budget of 1,400 million pesos is allocated to public works, with approximately 90% consumed by operational costs and payroll.

Canaco has proposed an administrative reengineering to reduce fixed spending and redirect resources toward essential services, including trash collection, street lighting, and water quality. The organization also advocates for the implementation of a single-window system to simplify business licensing and reduce bureaucracy.

In Cuernavaca, the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE) has urged merchants to report extortion and abuses of power by municipal inspectors. CCE President Griselda Hurtado Calderón emphasized the need for legal action against irregular fees and arbitrary operations, particularly those targeting vulnerable vendors in the historic center. The call for reporting follows allegations of harassment and irregular sanctions by public officials.
