Spain and Mexico report divergent tourism trends amid global shifts

The global tourism sector is experiencing divergent trends driven by geopolitical stability, climate concerns, and economic shifts.

In Spain, airports have reached a record 67 million international passengers between January and July, a 5.2% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to travelers seeking stable destinations amidst conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. However, extreme heatwaves are impacting traveler loyalty, with studies suggesting a 15% decrease in the likelihood of return visits for those experiencing record temperatures. Additionally, debates regarding potential increases in tourism VAT and local tourist taxes are emerging as points of concern for both travelers and businesses.

In Mexico, the situation in the Caribbean is more complex. While vacation clubs in Quintana Roo maintained an 80% occupancy rate due to repeat travelers, the broader hotel sector faced challenges. Occupancy in areas like Cancún and Isla Mujeres has seen fluctuations, impacted by rising aviation costs, reduced flight routes, and geopolitical tensions. Furthermore, visits to Mayan archaeological sites in the region saw a significant decline in the second quarter of the year.
