Mexican Cartel Drug Operations Disrupted in the U.S. and South Africa

U.S. Homeland Security agents uncovered a sophisticated cross‑border tunnel linking Tijuana, Mexico, to a retail store near San Diego’s Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The tunnel, equipped with reinforced walls, rail and ventilation, was used to move more than a ton of cocaine valued at $45 million. Four suspects – two from San Diego and two from Mexico – were charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and use the tunnel.

In South Africa’s North West Province, police raided an elaborate crystal‑methamphetamine laboratory on a farm, seizing 481 kilograms of meth worth about $61 million. Eleven people were arrested, including four Mexican nationals. The bust is the fourth known South African lab with alleged Mexican cartel links, underscoring the transnational reach of Mexican drug syndicates.

Both operations illustrate how Mexican criminal organisations are expanding drug production and smuggling networks beyond their traditional territories, prompting calls for tighter border security and international cooperation.
